52 Plus Joker Cards of Note
Hand Drawn Spanish Deck, circa 1820
(from the collection of Tom & Judy Dawson)
This amazing Spanish pack of 40 cards
[complete with Ace through Seven, Knave, Cavalier and King in each of the four
suits of Coins, Swords, Clubs and Cups] is completely hand drawn and colored
with very fine ink strokes.
The first three cards show the brown and green back with each line and miniature
flower painstakingly drawn, the intricate Ace of Coins and the regal King of the
same suit.

The courts of the suit of Swords show the degree of
intricate work the artist brought to the task of designing and drawing each card
- image the overall effort to produce a complete pack of 40 cards!

The last three cards are the Ace of Cups, the Four of
Clubs and the Five of Swords.

There is no record, unfortunately, of the exact origin of
these cards. After close examination the expert Jean Darquenne, determined from
their designs and style that they were from Spain in the early years of the 19th
century.
