The four suits of this deck are literal translations of the suit names, representing "the four powers which control the whole universe", namely Wealth, Protection, Industry and Affection, the four maxims that appear on the coat-of-arms of Prince Charles.
The joker represents the Prince Charles coat-of-arms, made up of the four suit symbols and the four maxims.

- The red heart suit is a human heart and represents affection.

The Kings are:
- the Contractor (King of Industry, or Spades) who has acquired wealth through the use of spades;
- the industrious young man (King of Affection or Hearts) who has gained wealth and affection from his heart of affection for honor and self respect;
- the Jeweler (King of Wealth or Diamonds);
- and the Chief of Police (King of Protection or Clubs) who protects life, honor and wealth.
