The Murphy Varnish
From the collection of Rhonda and Bob Hawes
Transformation cards are those in which the suit signs (pips) have been incorporated into artistic designs or cartoons. The first known deck of this type was published in Europe in 1804.
The Murphy Varnish Transformation deck was made for the Murphy Varnish Company by A. Dougherty, New York, in 1883. It is one of the most creative decks made in both the transformation and advertising categories, and is highly sought after by collectors of both.
